A turquoise-coloured glazed faience amulet of a cobra in the form of a uraeus, with a coiled body behind the upreared head. Suspension loop behind the head.
Egyptian Late Period, 664-332 B.C.
Condition: Complete and intact.
Length 3.1 cms (1.2 ins)
Provenance: From a private collection acquired by the previous owner's father in the 1950's.
Reference: See Carol Andrews' Amulets of Ancient Egypt (London 1994) page 76.
Carol Andrews explains that the uraeus was an amulet that provided the non-Royal dead with the protection normally reserved for royalty, but which, because of the sloughing of its skin, also symbolized resurrection.
