A pretty necklace composed of matched Egyptian faience beads of tube and disc form, with a central amulet as pendant representing 'papyrus' amulet in blue glazed faience. The beads have been restrung with modern gold-plated spacer beads, wire and gold-plated clasp and loops.
The beads and amulet date to the late Dynastic period: Circa 7th-1st century BC.
Very Fine condition
Total necklace length 49 cms (19.3 ins) including the fastener.
The papyrus was used in the hieroglyphic script for the word 'wadj', meaning 'green' or 'fresh'. The amulet was meant to be worn, carried, or offered to a deity in the belief that it will magically bestow a particular power or form of protection. The papyrus as an amulet represented birth and resurrection.
