A bright blue faience finger ring. The elliptical bezel is moulded with a series of hieroglyphs. At the top Register has a slightly worn but visible circular indentation at the very top represents the sun disc (Re). Out of divine honour, it is placed at the apex of the design: a dominant symbol in the middle is the Scarab Beetle (Kheper), representing rebirth, existence, and creation: the signs flanking the central beetle represent two symmetrical ostrich feathers of Maat: at the base is the horizontal Men board hieroglyph (representing stability and endurance). Together they form the pharaoh's timeless throne name, Menkheperre.
Ancient Egyptian New Kingdom Amarna period: Circa 1336-1327 B.C.
Condition: As is often the case, the top of bezel and hoop have been repaired. Otherwise in fine condition generally.
Maximum width: 20 mms (0.79 ins)
Provenance: Provenance: Ex London gallery; previously in a home counties UK collection circa 1930-1940.
Even though Thutmose III ruled generations before the Amarna period, he was considered one of Egypt's greatest military and spiritual pharaohs. As a result, his name became a highly revered, post-mortem "brand" of protective magic.
