An amulet of a recumbent lion in turquoise glazed faience. The amulet is finely modelled with incised details, the front paws outstretched forward, the tail curling around the right haunch, on integral rectangular base with a suspension loop on its back. Supplied with a small acrylic display block.
Ancient Egyptian Late Dynastic period: 7th-1st century BC.
Condition: Complete and intact.
Length 25.3 mms (1 inch).

Carol Andrews (Amulets of Ancient Egypt) tells us that most such amulets are late in date, for in a Late Period papyrus, a spell against snakes requires the words to be said "over a lion of glazed composition threaded to a red linen".
