Carol Andrews tells us that most such amulets are late in date. In a Late Period papyrus, a spell against snakes requires the words to be said 'over a lion of glazed composition threaded to a red linen'. (Carol Andrews. Amulets of Ancient Egypt; University of Texas Press, 1 Jan. 1994.)
