An unusual Ancient Egyptian green faience scaraboid, one side showing a depiction of a vervet monkey standing on three legs, with one paw to his face, the tail wrapped between the legs. The other side is flat. Pierced longitudinally for suspension.
Supplied with a modern hard wax impression of each side.
Late Period: Circa 6th-1st century BC

Provenance: From the Gustave Mustaki collection, a collector of antiquities who amassed large collection in Alexandria (Egypt) in the early 20th century and his collection came to the UK under Egyptian licence in 1947.
Monkeys were clever and agile; traits admired in amulets for warding off evil or enhancing personal traits like wit or agility.
