A steatite Egyptian scarab with incised features. The top is carved with the detailed anatomy of a scarab, including a moulded head and clypeus, with incised lines marking the prothorax and elytra. The base is carved with three clear hieroglyphs: a recumbent lion or sphinx facing left in the impression; the 'wadj' sign, a single-stemmed papyrus stalk, and a 'djed' pillar which together convey the meaning 'May [the King/Bearer] Prosper and Endure', which would act as a powerful talisman to attract enduring vitality, physical renewal, and continuous protection from the divine ruler.
Ancient Egyptian Middle to New Kingdom: Circa 2000-1000 BC.
