A Roman dark grey terracotta oil lamp decorated with a Murmillo gladiator, in high relief. He stands posing in a victorious stance, the gladius (short sword) in left hand, a scutum (semi-cylindrical shield with horizontal centre grip of the type used by the Roman infantry) in right.
Early Roman Imperial: Circa 10-40 AD.
Very Fine condition: Complete and intact; one of the sides of the lamp with a few surface digs.
Length 9.1 cms (3.6 ins).
Provenance: Ex Mark Wieclaw collection 1983-2019.
