A graceful bronze statuette of the goddess Juno. She stands frontally in a long chiton and a mantle drawn up over the head, the left hand concealed beneath the mantle, the right free and lowered. Under the edge of the veil the hair is parted in the centre and surmounted by a diadem.
Roman; Circa: 3rd-4th century AD.
Good condition with expected old wear, obvious losses at the back (several small holes worn through), light nicks and surface scratches, signs of burial, encrustations. Good stable bronze with a rich dark patina.
Height cm 11.34 cms (4.5 ins).
The veiled and diademed matron is the standard iconography of Juno, and the size of the piece is that of the bronzes kept in a domestic shrine. Juno was the queen of the Roman gods, the wife of Jupiter and served as a champion and protector of women, especially in their domestic roles of marriage and motherhood.
