A Roman unguentarium in pale green glass. The flask has a small rounded bell-shaped body, tall neck, with rolled over rim and stands on a flat base. The body and crust exhibit attractive patches of iridescence.

 

Eastern Mediterranean: Circa 2nd-3rd century AD.

 

Complete and intact, with crusty accretions.

Height 17.2 cms (6.8 ins).

At the height of its popularity in Rome, glass was present in nearly every aspect of daily life. It was a particularly favoured container for precious, valuable liquids, such as expensive oils, perfumes, and medicines which were produced from all corners of the Roman Empire.
