An interesting, relatively small provincial Roman terracotta oil lamp. The discus is decorated with a twin-handled kantharos, used specifically for drinking wine. Rear of the lamp is a solid handle; at the base a maker's mark possibly in the form of a right facing hand, as well as the recent collector's item number.
Roman Empire: Circa 3rd century AD.
Complete and intact; the scene a little worn.
Length 6.87 cms (2.7 ins)
Provenance: From an old German collection, 1960's-1970's.
The kantharos is the primary attribute of Dionysus, the god of wine. A depiction of his signature cup invoked his protection and presence within the household.
