An Ancient Roman silver finger ring with a round section hoop with expanding shoulders, and an oval bezel. The oval bezel is set with a carnelian intaglio carved with a depiction of the goddess, Minerva. She is shown standing, wearing a Corinthian helmet, dressed in long robes, holding a spear and shield, with her left arm extended, holding a patera (libation bowl) over an altar which lies at her feet.
Roman empire: Circa 2nd-4th century AD.

Provenance: Ex London gallery, previously from the late Alison Barker collection, a retired London barrister; from her collection formed 1960s-1990s.
Minerva was one of the most popular choices for Roman signet rings because she embodied both the strength of a warrior and the wisdom of a counsellor.
